Advanced Weapons Elevators

Federal Equipment Company (FEC) has developed an Advanced Weapons Elevator (AWE) with MagneMotion and Northrop Grumman Newport News for the U.S. Navy's new Aircraft Carrier class. In 2005 FEC was awarded a contract from Northrop Grumman to design and build the AWE for the CVN 78 Aircraft Carrier, the USS Gerald Ford. The contract consists of manufacturing (11) Elevators for the Carrier which is scheduled for delivery in 2016.

FEC’s Advanced Weapons Elevator demonstrates a 24,000-pound lift capacity, with 150% overload capacity. Designed to move at 150 feet per minute, it accelerates to full speed in 2 seconds. The state-of-the-art elevators increase capacity over 200% and speed by 50% compared to the legacy elevators.

Features include motor thermal protection, emergency braking, and our "smart control system" that estimates the payload weight. Its features are typical of all FEC LSM based Elevator Systems including our new HRVHMM Proof-of-Concept, funded by the Office of Naval Research. The elevator design serves as a proof of concept for industrial elevator applications. LSM-based vertical platform lifts and horizontal movement can be used for heavy machinery, munitions, or as a warehouse storage system.

Functional testing of the AWE Lead Unit led FEC to build a test facility at its River Road building. The 40’ structure can house a full scale AWE system capable of 32’ of vertical travel. Below is a video depicting an AWE rated-load test cycle within our test facility.

Full production is currently underway for CVN-78 and CVN-79. Check out FEC on NOVA.
