Fire Doors - T-AKE Ships

Federal Equipment Company has designed and manufactured solid steel panel doors for the T-AKE class of ships built by National Steel and Ship Building in San Diego, a subsidiary of General Dynamics.  These fire doors are designed as solid panels that become a moveable bulkhead that has been tested and are certified to meet an A-60 fire rating. The door itself is used to separate the helo-hangar area from interior cargo handling areas on board the ship.   It is constructed of ¼” thk steel plate and vertical and horizontal stiffeners on the back, in between which 6 inches of A-60 fire rated insulation is applied.  Around the perimeter of the door where it seals against the adjoining bulkhead is an intumescent seal which expands with heat and prevents smoke from passing through the opening in the event of a fire.  There are two such doors on board, one measuring 17’ wide x 9’-2” tall and the other, 14’ wide x 9’2” tall.  Federal Equipment Company has provided these doors on T-AKE Hulls 1-12 and plans on providing them for the remaining T-AKE builds.
